Director of Communications

Bishops University is seeking a Director of Communications to lead the development and the implementation of strategic communications and branding plans for the University. This role reports to the VP Government Relations and Planning.

 

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

 

  • Lead the Communications department in providing communications and marketing advice as well as training and support to all units of the University including the Principal's Office, Faculties, Recruitment and Admissions, Advancement, Athletics, etc.;
  • Manage the reputation and brand strategies for the University;
  • Oversee the University’s media relations;
  • Act as an official spokesperson for the University and handle media inquiries;
  • Spearhead the creation of communication tools aimed at various internal and external audiences using advertising, PR, social media, copywriting, mobile applications, web-based communications, research and analytical tools;
  • Build understanding and support for Bishop’s brand, mission, vision and goals, and engage faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of Bishop’s as ambassadors for the University;
  • Oversee the development of promotional materials to support ongoing recruitment efforts;

 

Education and Experience

  • University degree (preferably in English, Communications, Marketing or Journalism);
  • Minimum seven years of related strategic and operational experience in communications, marketing and public relations, along with progressive leadership and management experience in a comparable environment. Experience as a spokesperson would be an asset;
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills in both English and French;
  • Proficiency in strategic communications and marketing planning and implementation, with performance metrics;
  • Hands-on experience in reputation and brand management, and the creation of innovative, successful communications and brand strategies;
  • Direct experience in producing a variety of communication vehicles aimed at various internal and external audiences;
  • Strong understanding of traditional and digital advertising, social media, mobile applications, web-based communications, research and analytical tools;
  • Skills in financial and resource management;
  • Experience managing staff in a unionized environment preferred;
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks while still meeting tight deadlines.
