Consistently ranked amongst the top 20 public universities and the best 40 public and private universities in the world, The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a global centre for research and teaching. UBC’s spirit has embraced innovation and challenged the status quo since 1915. With two main campuses (Vancouver and Okanagan) located on the traditional territories of the Musqueam Coast Salish and Okanagan peoples, UBC’s entrepreneurial perspective encourages students, staff and faculty to challenge convention, lead discovery and explore new ways of learning. Bold thinking is given a place to define ideas that change the world at UBC.
It is truly a transformational time at UBC and a senior financial leader is required to build on this momentum. With an annual operating budget of $2.5 billion in revenue, total assets of over $6 billion and in excess of four million transactions recorded annually, the University Comptroller provides strategic financial direction and leadership to support the attainment of UBC's academic mission. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Finance & Administration, with a dotted line to the VP, Academic & Provost, the Comptroller leads the vision and mission of the University's budgeting, financial management, reporting processes, internal control over revenues, financial resources and Institutional financial Information systems. This position provides direction to a large team and is responsible for managing the financial integrated distributed model across all faculties and administrative units. Key to success in this critical role will be that the incumbent engages the broader University community, the University Executive and Board of Governors over financial operations and financial risk management.
The ideal candidate brings at least 15 years senior management experience in a complex multi-fund environment, preferably in the public sector. Known for being an exceptional leader, the Comptroller will have outstanding integrity, team building capabilities and mentorship skills. A university degree in business and a professional accounting designation are required, as well as an ability to ensure the highest reporting standards and effective finance and accounting systems are in place. Experience in preparing and presenting information at the Board and Executive level to assist in decision-making will be critical to success. The Comptroller will need to bring strong energy, a fresh perspective and solid change management leadership abilities to the role.
