The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland is Canada’s most comprehensive institute dedicated to advanced education, research, and industrial training for the oceans. With its main campus based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador the Institute is home to the School of Fisheries, School of Maritime Studies, and the School of Ocean Technology. The ability to answer the world’s most pressing questions as they relate to the oceans is housed within the Institute. The Fisheries and Marine Institute has for over fifty years been exploring the challenges and opportunities posed by the world’s oceans. The Opportunity

The School of Fisheries is a national and International leader in education, research, training and innovation for the worlds fisheries and aquaculture sector. The School of Fisheries has established itself as the premier and only university based School of Fisheries in Canada and is unique in its blending of research, education and industrial training. The Fisheries and Marine Institute is currently searching for an innovative and dynamic individual to lead its School of Fisheries. The School of Fisheries offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs along with a vibrant research and industrial training focus. As significant research partner in the recently announced Ocean Frontier Institute and Oceans supercluster initiatives the School of Fisheries is at the forefront of fisheries and aquaculture work regionally, nationally and internationally.  In addition to its academic programs the School of Fisheries is comprised of four dynamic and innovative Centre’s of excellence in fisheries and ecosystems, aquaculture and seafood development, sustainable aquatic resources, and community based education. 

The Candidate

The Head of the School of Fisheries is a senior leadership position within the Fisheries and Marine Institute and Memorial University of Newfoundland. This position will be responsible for the development of a future vision for the School and the day to day leadership of academic programs, research and industry linkages. The successful applicant will develop and maintain cooperative linkages with industrial partners, academic and government partners to ensure continued relevance of programs and research activities. This position requires an individual with a demonstrated aptitude for leadership with the ability to harness and market the School of Fisheries assets. The position requires an individual with extensive knowledge of the local, national, and international fishery, aquaculture and marine environmental sectors as well as insight into emerging trends.

The ideal candidate will possess a post graduate degree in a discipline related to sectors included in the mandate of the School of Fisheries with a minimum of 10 years progressive leadership experience in a relevant sector. Demonstrated knowledge of the post-secondary education environment is required. This senior leadership position requires a consensus building and decisive style of leadership with well defined communication and organizational abilities.
