TRIUMF is a publicly-funded national big-science facility that is owned and operated by a consortium of 20 Canadian universities. It provides a pool of talent, skills, and capabilities that no single university could maintain on its own.
Based in Vancouver and established in 1968, the TRIUMF lab is a hub for discovery and innovation inspired by a half-century of ingenuity in addressing and answering nature's most challenging questions. From the hunt for the smallest particles in our universe to research that advances the next generation of batteries or develops isotopes to diagnose and treat disease, TRIUMF drives more than scientific discovery. As a leading lab in its field, TRIUMF is notable for housing the world’s largest cyclotron.
Powered by its complement of top talent and advanced accelerator infrastructure, TRIUMF is pushing the frontiers in isotope science and innovation, as well as technologies to address fundamental and applied problems in particle and nuclear physics, and materials and life sciences. TRIUMF’s passion for understanding everything from the nature of the nucleus to the creation of the cosmos sparks imagination and inspiration, and offers improved health, economic opportunity, and a better world for all.
At an important time of transition for this world-class facility, TRIUMF is seeking a new Chief Financial Officer to lead TRIUMF’s finance strategy and to become a key member of the senior management team. This role holds a high degree of accountability for influencing strategy and shaping TRIUMF’s vision for the future.
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at TRIUMF will contribute to the development of the organization’s strategy and operational goals by managing budgets and ensuring funds are stewarded and allocated to achieve TRIUMF’s vision and mission. The CFO will work in concert with a team of high caliber leaders to identify, coordinate and support opportunities to further diversify funding channels for the organization. Leadership of the finance function is integral to the success of TRIUMF, so the CFO will lead, manage and develop a department that aspires to be a highly performing enabler to TRIUMF. Furthermore, the CFO will have oversight of timely and accurate reporting of results and financial information to senior management, the Board and relevant stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with local, provincial and federal budgetary reporting requirements. The CFO will assess, manage and control risks and insurance relating to the organization. Finally, the CFO will ensure regulatory reporting is completed as required for registered charity status.
You as the CFO will contribute to TRIUMF as an experienced finance executive who has held accountability for an organization, division or function and contributed to overall strategy. You will understand the not-for profit or public sector in terms of its challenges and opportunities, such as funding, governance etc. and have ideally worked in both private and non-profit sectors. Your career demonstrates a strong working knowledge of complex financial information systems and reporting. You have managed a complex and significant budget and are experienced in planning and managing finances for capital projects and infrastructure. In addition, you have experience with procurement and tender processes, and can develop business cases for funding diversification and strategies. Underpinning that skillset, you have the knowledge and experience in the development of risk management frameworks and how it would apply in this context. Finally, you as CFO will have a history of developing talent and building effective and motivated teams.
If the opportunity to contribute to an organization pushing the frontiers of global science interests you and you meet the criteria above, we would be delighted to discuss further.
At TRIUMF, we’re passionate about accelerating discovery and innovation to improve lives and build a better world. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to excellence and enhance our ability to create knowledge and opportunity for all. Together, we are committed to building an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the voices of our employees, students, partners, and the people and communities we serve.
