THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Vice-President (Research), you will be a member of the Vice-President (Research) Team [VPRT] which is a committee consisting of the VPR’s direct reports who work with the VPR to develop strategic direction for Research at Memorial University, as well as oversight/implementation of operational issues and objectives that are portfolio and/or unit-specific.
In collaboration with the university community, as Director, you will facilitate and support the strategy and long-term approach to advance Innovation and Entrepreneurship activities across the university and its interaction with the regional and national innovation ecosystem. This position will provide an exceptional opportunity to transform the university’s successful technology transfer program into a unique innovation management, entrepreneurial and technology commercialization ecosystem.
As Director, you will play a key role in the University’s Innovation Steering Committee, working collaboratively with a variety of university units and the university’s Separately Incorporated Entities (SIE’s) to build and solidify a network of university stakeholders with common goals relating to innovation and entrepreneurship. Directly supporting this committee, this position will coordinate and recommend agenda items and ensure appropriate assignment and follow through of action items. Complementing existing activities and resources within the university, this position will identify new partnership opportunities and establish and maintain effective relationships with industry, government and other key external stakeholders. In accordance with relevant university policies including the recently approved Intellectual Property policy, the Director will also manage inherent risks while leading the university’s business development efforts related to technological innovations, such as strategic evaluation, intellectual property protection, technology and knowledge transfer, disclosures of ideas and inventions from university employees including faculty, staff and students.
The Director will lead the operations of the Technology Transfer and Commercialization Office (TTCO). This position will also provide advice and assistance to faculty, staff and students engaged in research by explaining and interpreting complex matters pertaining to technology transfer and commercialization, as well as all related aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship. The Director will oversee the implementation of the key actions of Memorial University's Technology Transfer and Commercialization Strategy, including the identification and establishment of appropriate metrics to track the success of the Strategy and TTCO goals and objectives. This position will also provide leadership to the TTCO budget management and strategic fiscal direction, including Springboard reporting and application renewal.

You are an accomplished leader in the areas of technology commercialization, innovation and entrepreneurship and possess a graduate level degree. You have a thorough understanding of the provincial entrepreneurial ecosystem and the university community and a demonstrated ability to develop partnerships and work collaboratively with industry, government and other stakeholders to support commercialization and economic development. A strategic thinker with well-developed business acumen, you have a proven record of management and leadership effectiveness and the ability to build strong teams to strengthen organizational health. You have superior negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills, and you naturally build relationships based on listening, adding value and seeking solutions. An effective project and change manager, you have a collaborative approach, motivating, inspiring, and guiding people to achieve operational excellence. You are focused on realizing results and committed to innovation and continuous improvement by respectfully challenging others to think creatively.
