Associate Vice-President Research
Dalhousie University is seeking an Associate Vice-President Research (AVPR) who will help lead the strategic direction of Research and Innovation enterprise at Dalhousie.
Dalhousie University is a member of the U15 research-intensive universities in Canada. In 2020/21, Dalhousie received more than $194M in external research funding. As the only member of the U15 in Atlantic Canada, Dalhousie is a leader in the region and a respected partner nationally on research programming and innovation. Dalhousie provides a unique, interactive and collaborative environment for creating and sharing knowledge, supported by research funding from governments, industry and nongovernmental organizations.
Reporting directly to the Vice-President Research and Innovation (VPRI), the AVPR will facilitate institutional and international strategic priorities and initiatives related to research and innovation. As a key member of Dalhousie’s senior leadership team, the AVPR will recommend, enable, and lead various strategic initiatives that help deliver on the pillars of Dalhousie's Strategic Plan (2021-2026), Third Century Promise. The AVPR will also provide specific direction and leadership regarding Tri-Council, federal agency, and other sources of funding as well as data on the productivity and funding of research. In addition, the AVPR acts as a strategic leader and advisor to the University’s Centres and Institutes, Office of Research Services (ORS), the Office of Commercialization and Industry Engagement (OCIE), Dal Innovates, and the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation (OVPRI). The AVPR will collaborate and engage with external partners such as government, industry, and other post-secondary institutions. It is expected that the AVPR will facilitate and enable collaborations across our campuses to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the portfolio. This will be done, in part, by working with senior academic leaders and others to facilitate greater integration of research and innovation.
The ideal candidate will hold the rank of full Professor and have a record of excellence in scholarship and impact. The successful candidate will have institutional leadership experience and have served on cross-campus committees and/or initiatives. The AVPR will come to the role with a reputation as a consensus-builder, a facilitator, and a collaborator with a history of effective high-quality and productive professional relationships. Strong skills facilitating and supporting research and innovation agendas and the ability to nurture and foster interdisciplinary collaborations is essential. Finally, the AVPR must have a demonstrated record of commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and the ability to work successfully with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders in a respectful, collegial, service-oriented and responsive manner.
The successful candidate will be expected to take up the duties no later than July 1, 2022. The appointment is for a five-year renewable term and the successful candidate would be expected not to take a sabbatical leave during the five-year mandate.
