Associate Vice-President, Academic Experience

Are you committed to excellence in post-secondary education? Are you a transformative leader, recognized for your collaborative approach to driving continual improvement and achieving results? Can you build high-performing teams and productive relationships with all stakeholders? This executive mandate is a unique opportunity to do so and ensure that all Fleming College students enjoy a superior overall experience – both in and out of the classroom.

Fleming College is located in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes Region, in Central Ontario – a beautiful place to live and work, surrounded by natural beauty and a mere 90 minutes northeast of Toronto. The College’s 6,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, including hundreds of international students, attend at campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Haliburton and Cobourg. Fleming offers more than 100 full-time programs in Schools of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Arts + Design, General Arts and Sciences, Skilled Trades and Technology, Justice and Community Development, Health and Wellness, and Business and Information Technology, as well as other Continuing Education courses. Fleming is also extremely proud of the more than 71,000 Fleming alumni who are contributing to their communities in the region, across the province and around the world.

Our Fleming, Our Future, the College’s 2019-24 strategic plan, recognizes that technology and changing demographics have disrupted the world in which we live. Augmenting this digitalization priority has been the rapid demand for change as a result of COVID-19. Fleming College is seeking a transformative Associate Vice-President, Academic Experience (AVPAE) to develop and oversee the implementation of a leading-edge strategic academic plan that drives academic excellence, supports the strategic direction of the College and drives accountability throughout the Academic division.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President Academic and Student Experience, you will be accountable for the planning, organizing, staffing, budgeting, directing and managing of the College's Academic division. As AVPAE, you are an innovative leader who understands alternative delivery models and can champion new ways of learning. You will provide effective and pro-active leadership, and strategic planning to Academic leaders and staff. You will work closely with the VP of Applied Research and Innovation, to integrate applied research into the Academic division. A key mandate of AVPAE involves accountability for the content, delivery, and quality assurance of the College's post-secondary and non-post-secondary full-time, apprenticeship, upgrading and part-time academic programs.

As a community leader, you’ll maintain a strong presence in the community and at all Fleming campuses, initiating, promoting and creating sustainable external partnerships with universities, other colleges, school boards, business and industry, and community organizations by way of projects, pathways, articulation agreements, advisory committees and educational/training opportunities. It goes without saying that, as AVP of Academic Experience, you will be sharing accountability for the attainment of the College's strategic and business plans.

This mission-critical and high-impact role is an exceptional career opportunity for a visionary and critical thinker with a minimum of 9 years of experience, ideally combining teaching, administration and human resource management, with a track record of success as a leader in strategic planning and partnership building. As the ideal candidate, you will have experience within the college system, a background encompassing accountability for large operating and capital budget and revenue targets, and proven senior-level supervisory experience in an environment (preferably unionized) that promotes teamwork, transparency, respect, trust and integrity. While a PhD would be advantageous, a master’s degree is a minimum requirement.

Together with a global perspective on education, you bring a strong understanding of the process of learning, the design and delivery of post-secondary education, consumer demand in the educational sector, and academic environments as they relate to academic programs, processes and/or communications. Both a results-oriented education leader and an accomplished team builder and coach, you’re highly skilled in strategic planning, design thinking, risk and issue management, networking, public speaking and delivering presentations.

To succeed at Fleming, it is also essential that you have a deep and abiding commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion with proven skills in promoting a respectful and inclusive workplace environment, and the ability to establish trust and build strong relationships and consensus. Fleming is committed to strengthening its relationship with Indigenous Peoples by helping to create opportunities in post-secondary education and ensuring all students and staff gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous Peoples. This is a shared responsibility that will be reflected in your mandate.

To apply to this dynamic senior management role in post-secondary education, submit your application to Phelps at careers@phelpsgroup.ca, specifying the job title in the subject line of your e-mail. Application deadline: September 13, 2022.

Fleming College is committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and accessible learning and working environment. We welcome and encourage applications from those who would contribute to the further diversification of our community, including, but not limited to, women, racialized persons, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
