Position Summary
Loyalist College is seeking an experienced and innovative Corporate Writing Specialist to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, the incumbent will provide high-level writing and editorial support for a wide range of materials, including speeches, statements, letters, briefing notes, proposals, reports, scripts for college events, nomination and funding submissions, and internal communiqués. The Corporate Writing Specialist operates in a complex and dynamic postsecondary environment that requires sensitivity, responsiveness, political acumen, and the ability to engage professionally with a range of stakeholders. A deep understanding of the college’s mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities is essential.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in content creation, editing, and storytelling, with a sound knowledge of corporate communications and the ability to produce quality written material for a variety of audiences. The role entails the management of multiple projects and deliverables, extensive collaboration, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively in order to meet established timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Content Creation and Writing:
- Develops and writes a range of engaging and informative college materials, including internal communiques, emails, letters, reports, briefing notes, speeches, award nominations and funding proposals, scripts, newsletters, and articles.
- Coordinates with a range of internal and external stakeholders to gather information and translate into compelling content.
- Proofreading and Editing:
- Proofreads and edits drafted content to ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established style guide principles; includes materials such as newsletters, internal communiques, emails and announcements, reports, presentations, print and digital publications, award nominations and funding proposals, etc.
- Provides feedback on draft documents to help improve clarity, readability and flow, and ways that they might be improved to ensure resonance with the relevant audience(s).
- Writing and Communications Support:
- Develops exemplars and best practices to help inform internal communications standards and promote a consistent writing style that aligns with the college’s brand position, mission, vision, and values.
- Provides guidance to internal communicators on best writing practices and shares resources to ensure adherence to established style guides and writing conventions.
- Research:
- Undertakes ongoing research and environmental scans for the purpose of fact checking and accuracy, identification of emerging best practices in corporate communications, and issues of strategic importance in higher education.
- Maintains awareness of relevant internal and external positioning and messaging, ensuring that internal messages are developed alongside those advanced by coordinating bodies such as Colleges Ontario and CICan as well as the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
- Project Management:
- Oversees project management cycle for assigned projects including project planning, establishment of key deliverables, identification of resource requirements, implementation, and evaluation, ensuring that established deadlines and deliverables are met.
- Manages a content calendar and ensures timely delivery of materials.
Qualifications
- Completion of a four-year degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of professional writing and editing experience for various platforms, preferably in a postsecondary education or public sector setting.
- Proven track record of producing high-quality written content for diverse audiences and experience developing and supporting internal corporate communications.
- A diverse portfolio of writing and editing samples showcasing a range of content types (articles, press releases, marketing copy, web content, newsletters, proposals and nominations, speeches, etc.).
- Strong understanding of Canadian Press (CP) Style and other editorial guidelines.
- Knowledge of plain language principles that support readability and accessibility as well as inclusive language practices that are both culturally sensitive and equity focused.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience managing multiple projects and working under tight deadlines.
